Description :

In Hiroshige’s time, large continuous compositions were comprised of multiple printed sheets. This triptych depicts the same subject as one of the prints in the Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces series, shown on the right, but was produced two years later. It was not unusual for Hiroshige to do several versions of the same subject, although the time of day, season, and mood of each version might be dramatically different. This work is one of a trio of triptychs, each symbolizing a different theme: snow, moon, or flowers. The clusters of whirlpools in this triptych are thought to recall flower blooms.
