Description :
As a result of the Tempö Reforms, Edo residents suffered under a variety of governmental prohibitions and financial regulations. In the Floating World, however, commoners could forget about the harsh reality and imagine that they too lived the carefree and elegant lifestyles of the upper class. The Genji boom continued during the following Meiji (1868-1912) and Taishö (1912-1926) periods. Some good examples of woodblock prints from those periods are currently exhibited in the Japan Gallery (Gallery 20). (from Tale of Genji exhibition 1/11/06-)
