Description :
Kawase-Zozoji Temple in Snow- 1.jpg is: Hasui ‘Snow at Zojoji Shrine’ (1929) Beautiful temple scene with bijin under umbrella surrounded by drifting snowfall by Hasui Kawase (1887-1957) titled “Yuki no Zojoji” (translates as “Snow at Zojoji Shrine”) and margin dated originally as “Showa 4, Nigatsu” (or 1929, February). One of 16 Hasui images published during 1929 and 1930 by Kawaguchi & Sakai (and as such, bears no Watanabe seals)?a posthumous edition struck off of the original blocks. Published by Shobisha Publisher who acquired the blocks when K & S dissolved in 1931. Circa 1990's. The workmanship in both carving and printing is simply superb?very nice gradation of colors (“bokashi”) virtually throughout print with various shadings of grays, tans, reds, and very soft blues; and nicely done “gauffrage” (“blind-printing” or embossing) to many of the falling snowflakes which give the print real “depth.” Print is in absolute pristine condition?no tears, no stains, no fading. Additionally, the hand-made Japanese paper used in these prints is much heavier and nicer than many other Hasui prints. Great image!! Image measures 9 ? x 14 ? inches
