Wednesday, 30 April 2008 Artist YOSHIKAWA, Kanpo (1894-1979) Title "Cherry Blossoms at Night, Maruyama Park (Kyoto)" ("Maruyama no Yo-Zakura") Date 1925 (Second Edition, ca1925-31) Series na Publisher Sato Shotaro Publisher (Kyoto, c1895-1931) Seal, Carver/Printer Maeda/Oiwa Image Size 10 1/2 x 15 3/8 ("dai-oban") Impression Very Fine. Wonderfully executed "bokashi" shading; extensive "gauffrage" (embossing) to cherry blossoms; nicely detailed carving, crisp lines. Condition Nearly Excellent. Excellent colors. Clean front and verso. (Light toning; few tiny marks; very slight wear.) Reference/Illus Blair's 1930 "Toldedo Exhibition" pl. #336. Comments A beautifully illuminated and evocative night scene. A classic "shin hanga" print of the 1930 Toledo Exhibition and among the finest images of the period. (Lacks "first edition verso seal"--but early.) Very rarely available. Item # DG-680
