Description :
Shichirihama in Sagami Province, from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) By the time you get to Sagami province (present day Kanagawa prefecture), Mt. Fuji has grown quite large on the horizon. Here Mt. Fuji is seen across the reach of the Sagami Bay. The first ten prints in Hokusai's "Thirty Six Views of Mt. Fuji" series, were drawn with their outline or main wood block printed in indigo, and they have an overall bluish, indigo-based tonality. This cool refreshing color range was extremely popular at the time. The pigment used to get this deep indigo blue was a man-made pigment introduced from Europe called "Prussian blue".
