Description :
The exact location of vantage-point in Hiroshige’s series the “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” leaves open the question of realism in depiction of a particular place. However, the mention of Izu Province tells the viewer that this is the view from Izu peninsula south-east of Mt. Fuji. The composition of waterfall and low, forested hills is capped by the majestic Mt. Fuji in the distance. Great care has been taken to echo the shape of the hill in the foreground with the perfect cone-shaped Fuji. Although the series “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” had been created before by both Hokusai and Hiroshige, the imagery and the selected viewpoints varied according to composition, print format (such as vertical or horizontal sheet), and, most importantly, by artistic and creative choice. This last series by Hiroshige is admired for its direct approach to the composition and the landscape and, at the same time, is criticized for its lack of specificity.
