From the series, "Shin Nigao" (New Portraits). kawakami Sadayakko is in the role of Queen Artes. Sadayakko (1871-1946) was a famed actress who had many acquaintances in the top government and business sectors. Her life long romance with the hydroelectric-power mogul, Momosuke Fukazawa, inspired several books and movies. "Shin Nigao" was a short-lived magazine series started in 1915 for 5 issues. Several artists contributed to one or two prints for the series which showcased more individual approaches to the traditional actor's portraits.
