Kawanabe Kyosai is said to have identified himself with crows or ravens (karasu). Kyosai's most renowned painting during his lifetime depicted a crow or raven. That painting was exhibited at the Second National Industrial Exhibition (1881) where it received second prize. Kyosai became widely known as a painter and print-designer of crows when his famous work was later purchased by a Japanese confectioner for a very high sum.
