Description :
In 807, the Buddhist monk Kukai discovered these hot springs in Izu Province and founded the nearby Shuzen Temple. The most prominent hot spring bubbles out of the rocks in the middle of the Katsura River, shown here lined with inns and bathhouses. Although the government restricted their travel, commoners were permitted to visit such destinations for health purposes. Today, the Shuzen Temple hot springs remain an important resort and spa.
