Description :
Harunobu sought inspiration from classic literature and art and imbued his contemporary scenes with poetic elegance. One of his artist names was Shikojin, "one who reflects on the past." This print design (shown here in two impressions) is part of a set of six, each referring to six different Japanese rivers named Tamagawa eulogized in poems. Ide no Tamagawa in Yamashiro province was mentioned in a tanka by Fujiwara Shunzei (or Toshinari; 1114-1204), the poet portrayed in the square cartouche: The poem is quoted from the imperial poetry anthology Shin kokin waka-shu, II:159 (New Collection of Poems of Ancient and Modern Times; compiled in 1201-5): Halting my horse I water him again Where the dew of the yamabuki Mingles with the river- The Jewel River of Ide.
