Description :
Onoe Kikugoro I seated before a tsuitate (one-panel screen) is putting the finishing touches to a painting of an onnagata actor of the Segawa lineage, Segawa Kikujiro I (1715-56) [OR a memorial portrait of Segawa Kikunojo (1693?-1749); or Segawa Kikunojo II (1741-73)]; the figure is shown dancing dressed in a kimono with cherry blossom design, near chrysanthemums and holding an origami crane. Onoe Kikugoro I is assisted by a by a youth, Bando Hikosaburo II, who is grinding pigments in a mortar.Onoe Kikugoro I is dressed in a kimono with the design of umbrellas and falling rain and a haori with an open fan design. Bando Hikosaburo II ois dressed in a kimono with a rabbit design.The poem reads: "The first calligraphy of the oak tree and the crane of the rising sun (Kashiwagiya / asahi no tsuru / no fude hajime).
