Description :
The Ginkaku temple was built as a retirement villa in the Higashiyama area in Kyoto in 1482 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. It subsequently became a center of Kyoto's elegant "Higashiyama culture". Following Yoshimasa's death in 1490 it was converted into a Zen temple dedicated to his memory. The Silver Pavilion was spared a devastating fire in the 16th century. Hotei, #560
