Description :
Sunday, 26 March 2006 JAPANESE WOOD BLOCK PRINT with TOBACCO STORE FLAG, GEISHA, OLD TIME HOTEL, RESTAURANT, BUSINESS HOUSE at NIGHT - SIGNED. The moonlit evening shows a lot of activity. The flag is for a cigarette / tobacco shop; a geisha walking; an old time hotel / business house; a vegetable vendor pushing a cart; and more. I was told this piece and many others I purchased were obtained by the original owner ( the seller's father) in Japan in the 1960's, however I don't really know the age of the wood block prints. Besides the Japanese characters that are visible in the framed print, there are additional Japanese writing characters on the left margin. Inside the print in lower right is the artist's mark. There is bleedback on the back of print. I did have these prints reviewed by a native of Japan; she thinks these are much older; maybe from the 1920's - 1930's. An additional sticker is on the back. Size of the actual picture is 10-1/4" by 14-3/4". The frame is 15-1/4" by 18-3/4". The wood block print is simply framed in a black wood, lacqured frame, under glass. Condition is excellent and the colors are very strong; there are a few tiny bumps on the frame. The print is attached to the back of the matting, only at the upper right and left corners.
