Description :
Tuesday, 12 April 2005 Artist Noel Nouet (1885-1969) (Active 1935-37, left Japan 1962) Title "Kagurazaka at Ushigomei" ("Katurazaka") Date 1937 (early printing by Yokoi, likely 1956-62) Series "Scenes of Tokyo Views" ("Tokyo fukkei zen nijuyon mai") (Learn more: ("The Woodblock Prints of Noel Nouet"). Publisher Doi Hangaten (with Doi "watermark" upper left) Carver/Printer Harada/Yokoi Image Size 9 3/8 x 14 1/4 Impression Fine. Superbly executed "bokashi" shading; very finely carved details, crisp key-lines. Condition Excellent. Strong colors; clean backside. (No flaws noted--pristine.) Reference/Illus na Comments A very "atmospheric" print, achieved by the skillful depiction of night lights. This Noute image pre-dates the well-known, nearly similar 1939 Koitsu image. It is believed that the extremely fine lines seen in the "key-blocks" of Noute's prints may have, in fact, been produced using zinc plates. (Learn more.)
