Description :

This print deserves your special interest! In 1916 the Osaka publisher Bun'endo (Kanao Tanejiro) published a series of 30 landscape prints by 5 different young artists. The print offered here is No. 1 from the series, Owada. The series as a whole is called Hanshin Meisho Zue, and is in fact the first Shin Hanga landscape series, published before Hasui and Yoshida started in the woodblock medium. The artist of this print is Noda Kyuho (1879-1971), a pupil of Terazaki Kogyo (1866-1919), the artist of the two kuchi-e I am offering this week. Fine impression and colors, good condition: two edges a bit dusty, a school stamp at bottom. Decidedly interesting and rare! I have included a photo from: Lawrence Smith, Modern Japanese Prints 1912-1989, British Museum Press, 1994.
