Monday, 9 February 2009 MUTO KATEI Engakuji Temple in Kamakura -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: dated 1954, published by Watanabe, signed and sealed by the artist at the lower left in the print, 6mm Watanabe publisher's seal in red in lower left corner; 1st edition Size: approx. 10.5" x 15.5" Condition: VG, no flaws, uncirculated print, never framed Impression: Fine, solid keylines, nice surface texture, tight registration Color: Fine, deep saturated color and bleed through to verso -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After WWII the workshop of Shozaburo Watanabe continued its association with several of its pre-war artists (most noteably Kawase Hasui and Ito Shinsui), and added new ones including Ide Gakusui, Kikuchi Ryoji, and Muto Katei. Other than his birth year of 1910, little is known of the artist Muto Katei who designed this rarely seen Hasui-esque print of the village Futomi at nightfall.
