Woodblock by Kiyochika ‘Rainfall at Shin-Ohashi Bridge’ (1876) Late afternoon rainfall scene woodblock print by Kiyochika Kobayashi (1847-1915) titled “Tokyo Shin-ohashi Uchuzu” (translates as “Rainfall at Shin-Ohashi Bridge, Tokyo”) and margin-dated as “Meiji 9” (or 1876). This print is shown as plate #11, page 24, in Henry D. Smith II’s wonderful book, “Kiyochika, Artist of Meiji Japan.” A mid-Showa era “re-strike,” at is, printed from superbly and accurately re-cut blocks shortly after WWII. Circa 1950’s. Superb print?nicely detailed and colorful image. The workmanship in printing is quite good?nice gradation of colors (“bokashi”) to the sky and horizon areas of print. Bold, bright colors, and in very good to excellent condition?just a couple of faint spots to lower margin below title. Image measures 8" x 13 1/8 inches.
