Description :
This is a beautiful original color woodblock print by noted Japanese printmaker Kawase Hasui. It is a Kawaguchi/Sakai-published print, rather than the more common Watanabe-published prints typically seen on ebay. From an image perspective, this is one of Hasui's strongest prints. It features virtually all of the elements of 20th century Japanese printmaking in one print: gofun snow, an umbrella, a red pagoda, stone lanterns. The print is signed lower left, and bears the publisher's seals appropriate to an early printing. Note the fan-shaped seal lower left. The print could stand to be cleaned, as there is some minor smudging in the margins, a tiny bit of foxing and some adhesive residue verso. That said, a simple cleaning should transform it into a truly exceptional example of Hasui's early work. It measures about 14 x 7 1/2 plus margins.
