KAWASE HASUI Okitsu-cho, Suruga from the series Selection of views of the Tokaido Date: August 1934, published by Watanabe Size: oban, with full margins, approx. 10.5" X 15.5" Documentation: Kawase Hasui: The Complete Woodblock Prints, Hotei, 2003, Vol. II, pp.404, illustration 229 Narazaki writes that this is "A clever composition that illustrates the white walls of earthen storehouses, an array of slanting black surfaces stacked as tiled roof. The houses are effectively conveyed against the distant landscape of water; sky and clouds. It was sketched on February 20, 1933, produced on September 15 of the same year and published in March 1934." Okitsu is the 17th station on the Tokaido. The Suruga region is part of present-day Shizuoka prefecture.
