Title The Great Buddha first edition Artist Hasui Kawase 1883-1957 Signature 'Hasui'. Seal Artist's seal. Dated 1930. Publisher S. Watanabe. Medium/Technique Woodblock print. Description "Kamakura Daibutsu" (The Great Buddha, Kamakura). This design has another color version which was created later. The bronze statue of Amida Buddha, also popularly known as "The Great Buddha of Kamakura". It is located near the Kotoku Temple in Kamakura. With a height of 13.35 meters, it is the second highest Buddha statue in Japan. The temple compound which housed the Buddha was swept away by the great tsunami in 1495. But the venerable Buddha remained here to oversee a million people every year. Note Publisher Watanabe's seal during 1927-32 stamped on the right margin. Watanabe's old seal indicating its Ginza address is pasted on the backside.
