Description :
THIS IS AN ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT - NOT A REPRODUCTION OF A WOODBLOCK PRINT. SHIRO KASAMATSU IS WELL KNOWN AND RENOWNED AS A WOODBLOCK ARTIST. HE WAS BORN IN 1898. HE ORIGINALLY STUDIED JAPANESE PAINTING BUT IN 1919 SWITCHED TO DESIGNING WOODBLOCKS. MOST OF HIS PRINTS WERE PUBLISHED BY WATANABE BUT SOME WERE PUBLISHED BY UNSODO AND, LATER, HE CARVED AND PRINTED HIS OWN BLOCKS. THIS PRINT DEPICTS AN OWL IN TWO TIME ZONES - NIGHT AND DAY. THE PRINT HAS STRONG COLORS AND HAS GOOD BLEEDTHROUGH TO THE REVERSE. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION THOUGH THERE IS AN OVERALL YELLOW TONING TO THE PAPER, BUT WHICH IS NOT VISIBLE IN THE IMAGE AREA, AND THERE IS A SLIGHT MATT BURN WHICH ONLY SHOWS ON THE YELLOW AREA, SEE PHOTO. THE PRINT IS NUMBERED 85/100 AND IS DATED 1957. IT IS SIGNED IN THE BLOCK AND HAS A KASAMATSU SEAL. THE IMAGE SIZE IS 10" x 14 3/4".
