Sunday, 13 November 2005 Shanks' Mare Tokaido: #1 Shinagawa Artist: Tamenobu Format: Oban yoko-e: 10" x 14.25" approx Subject: From series Tokaido Hizakurige. The story of a comical journey on foot along the Tokaido highway, made by two roguish men, Yajirobe who was running away from his poor merchant background (seen in the images in a blue over kimono: and Kitahachi, a run-away actor, seen in a checkered kimono. This first station has our heroes in the foreground arguing over carrying the provisions. Date: c.1910's Condition: Full size. Japanese album backing paper. Minor marks and flaws.
