Description :

Yoyoharu, Courtesan of the Matsubaya Pleasure House, by Ichirakusai Eisui (active ca. 1800) This print shows a woman of the pleasure quarters holding a ground cherry. While the Edo period red-light districts were officially sanctioned, they weren't the playground for just anyone. The popular oiran, or top-class geishas, of the day were depicted in this type of print. In ukiyo-e woodblock prints, this a close up view of the upper body of the subject is known as an okubi-e.
