Description :

Ichikawa Danjürö II in the role of Hiranoya Tokubei (seated) and the onnagata Sanogawa Mangiku, as Temmaya Ohatsu, in the 1/1719 Nakamura-za production of Sogazaki Shinjü. This play was based on the earlier Sonezaki Shinjü of Chikamatsu. According to the compiler of the Kabuki Nempyö, the playwright of the 1719 play made the work too elaborate. Other Kiyonobu actor subjects in this small format are known, and they may have been designed for or gathered together as an album. (Howard A. Link, primitive Ukiyo-e from the James A. Michener Collection in the HAA, 1980)
