Description :

The poet Harumichi no Tsuraki was a court official in Kyoto. This scene is based on an incident when the poet composed a poem about maple trees during his journey across Mount Shiga. From the steep mountain, a torrent cascades down and under the bridge, making a fitting foil for the poet who is crossing it. Clad in court noble's attire, Tsuraki strides ahead, his attendants following at a respectful distance. Tsuraki gazes into the water and across at the village and the lofty mountain peaks in the background. A sense of solitude and serenity exists, even though the large mountain crag at the right, overgrown with bushy maple trees, seems to threaten any traveler who traverses the bridge.
