Description :

The boy doll in this print is fully dressed in a kamishimo (a formal samurai robe of the Edo period, 1615-1868). The upper robe usually has two family crests, both on the upper chest area, as seen in this print. Edo period costume dolls typically demonstrated fashion trends of their time. This meant that popular actors, plays, and courtesans were frequently reproduced. For this reason, the dolls are considered to be a kind of visual history. (from “Doll! Doll! Doll! / Kawase Hasui” exhibition, 2/14/20063-)
