Description :
This print depicts a variation on the raigö theme, wherein a Buddhist deity descends to escort personally the souls of the faithful to a Buddhist paradise. At the top of the print, partially obscured by clouds, are the roofs of several heavenly pavilions and a pagoda of Amida’s Pure Land. At the upper right are six tiny figures representing transformed Buddha images or manifestations of Amida. Amida descends from the Western Paradise, accompanied by Kannon, Seishi, and twenty-five other bodhisattvas. A beam of light shines down from the urna (tuft of hair above the eyebrows) on Amida’s forehead. (from Pathway exhibition 1/29/08-)
