Description :

This print depicts the Chinese figure Lingzhao, daughter of the ninth-century Buddhist eccentric Pang Yun. Pang’s actions and outrageous sayings were already transmitted by the end of the Tang dynasty (618-906), making him a favorite figure in Zen Buddhism. Lingzhao appears often in anecdotes related to Pang, and later tradition conceived of her as a manifestation of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The standard depiction of Lingzhao with a basket refers to the fact that both she and her father sold bamboo baskets to support themselves. (from Pathway exhibition 1/29/08-)
