Colour woodblock print, oban triptych. Kabuki actors relaxing in the third floor dressing room of an Edo theatre. The actors are (from top to bottom, right sheet) Onoe Matsusuke I smoking a ‘kiseru’ tobacco pipe, Sawamura Gennosuke I writing on an open fan, Ichikawa Omezo I holding a western-style wine glass, seated by a large tray of food that includes an iron pot (nabe) and a tray of sushi; (centre sheet) Bando Mitsugoro III standing in the costume of a samurai, with an assistant actor behind him holding two swords, Iwai Kumesaburo I, Arashi Kanjuro I; (left sheet) Nakayama Tomisaburo I standing next to Matsumoto Koshiro V who holds another ‘kiseru’ tobacco pipe, Ichikawa Danjuro VII and Onoe Eizaburo I seated, reading a scroll of writing.
