Description :
As described in the handscroll-shaped cartouche the Sumida River which crosses the eastern part of Tokyo and flows into Edo Bay played a vital role in the history, culture, leisure and every day life of Edo citizens. Afloat one could enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossom trees in spring, fireworks in summer, moon-viewing in autumn and snow-covered scenery in winter-sights that were often recorded in paintings, woodblock prints and poetry. The shogun also sailed on the Sumida River was on various official trips
