Many sites in Japan are famous for their associations with poetic, literary references as well as historical importance and/or scenic, seasonal beauty. This small but representative selection of stencil-dyed images of famous places by Nishijima Takeshi includes a view of the beautiful Matsushima (“Pine Islands”) celebrated in numerous verses. The haiku poet Matsuo Bashō (1644-94) was so awestruck that he composed a verse that reads: Matsushima ah! / A-ah, Matsushima, ah! / Matsushima, ah! 松島や / ああ松島や / 松島や Also featured are also views of the famous Daikaku and Kiyomizu temples and the Heian Shrine. The Ozawa Pond at Daikaku Temple is considered a special place for viewing the rising moon from boats. A moon-viewing party is held at the temple every year around the date of the harvest moon in mid-September. Other calendar sheets emphasize experiences such as white-water boat rides down the scenic Hōzu River (starts northwest of Kyoto and snakes down to western Kyoto) or a visit to the village of Nambu in Tōhoku with its old, traditional thatched-roof buildings.
