Description :
The artist Isoda Koryusai was supremely skilled at conceiving hashira-e (pillar print) designs; this format was first popularized in the 1740s. Such prints were then used as decorations on the free-standing support pillars exposed when interior sliding screens were removed. In this print an attentive rooster faithfully protects and communicates with a hen and her lively chicks. His family is kept in a cage placed near an old plum tree with new blossoms. The sophisticated beauty of the composition is enhanced
