Description :
This rendition rotates the familiar configuration of the scene by 180 degrees, so that we view Hakamadare approaching an apparently unsuspecting Yasumasa. Despite the abbreviated format, the graduated shading of the clouds captures some of the atmospheric intensity of the earlier triptych, with the subtle palette of the other prints in the One Hundred Aspects of the Moon. The embossing on Yasumasa’s robes and the mica on his sword mount exemplify the deluxe printing effects in this series. Though clearly affected by his teacher’s model (adjacent), Kuniyoshi’s sympathetic treatment of the martial rogue Hakamadare contrasts with Yoshitoshi’s presentation of the cultivated Yasumasa as the hero.
