Description :
This is the commemorative portrait of the actor Nakamura Utaemon IV. It states that he died on February 17, Kaei 5(1852) at the age of 55, together with a death poem. He is dressed in a light blue court robe which was customary dress for burial. This type of print is called shini-e(death picture). Shini-e were published within a week of a popular kabuki star's death, and normally have no publishers mark or artist signature, as in this case. Looking at the style, it was very likely done by Kunisada.
