Description :
From the series The Sixty-Nine Post Stations (Rest Stops) of the Kisokaido Road, which went between Kyoto and Tokyo along the mountains. Also called the Nakasendo, it was one of the Five Routes out of Edo, Japan. The series associates some scene of history, legend, or popular fiction with each station. Here is Station 3 Warabi, with Inuyama Dosetsu seated amid flames and smoke, hands clasped, in his mouth magic pine sprigs wrapped in paper. According to legend, knowing the wizardry of fire, he could take revenge on the murderer of his father and sister.
