Description :

Hand painted on silk. Wood end roller. Complete with original artist signed and sealed scroll box. Thanks to Tosh Doi for this explanation: (1) Scroll box text "還暦叟" reads as "KAN REKI SOU (or OKINA)" in Japanese, which means "Sixty year old man" "祥邨題●" (簽?:hard to identify)reads as "SHOU SON DAI ●● (SEN?)" which means "written or titled by Shouson" The first square red chop is difficult to read, but second one is "SHOU SON" or "羊" (right half part) and "邨" (left half part). (2) Scroll box text "蘆雁之図" reads as "RO GAN NO ZU" meaning "Wild Geese and Reed" as its title. (3) Painting text: the drawing date was in "昭和九年初秋" or early autumn in 1934. As Ohara Shouson was born on Feb. 9, 1877 and died on Jan. 4, 1945, the actual year of his sixtieth birthday or "還暦" should be in 1937. But in Japan, especially during the pre-war period, they made it a custom to count his age in an accelerated manner. In Shouson's case, he added one year at his birth and an additional one year at each change of an era (from Meiji to Taisho and from Taisho to Showa, thus an extra two years). Therefore he wrote his "還暦" in 1934, thus there is no discrepancy in the dating of this scroll. This item is from my personal collection and is not for sale.
