Colour woodblock print, kakuban surimono. The kabuki actors (from right) Ichikawa Ebijuro I as the sumo wrestler Nuregami Chogoro and Ichikawa Danjuro VII as his rival, Hanaregoma Chokichi, both grasping tea cups which they are about to smash in their hands in a show of strength, from Act II, ‘The Sumo Wrestling scene’ (‘Sumoba’) (角力場), from the play ‘A Diary of Two Butterflies in the Pleasure Quarters’, (‘Futatsu chocho kuruwa nikki’) (双蝶々曲輪日記), by Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shoraku and Namiki Senryu; performed at the Kawarasaki-za in the 5th month of 1820 (Bunsei 3).
